  • WHEN WAS NAFDAC ESTABLISHED?
  • Pleased when was National Agency for Food and Drug Administration; NAFDAC  established in Nigeria?

    According to information available on its official website, NAFDAC was established in october 1992 but became fully active in January 1993.
    Its was formed under the Decree No. 15 of 1993 as amended by Decree No. 19 of 1999 and now the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Act Cap N1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004

    The core functions of NAFDAC are to regulate and control the:
    manufacture,
    importation,
    exportation,
    distribution,
    advertisement,
    sale and use of Food,
    Drugs,
    Cosmetics,
    Medical Devices,
    Packaged Water,
    Chemicals and Detergents
    All of which are collectively known as regulated products.

    NAFDAC WAS FORMED IN LATE 1992; ITS headquarters IS IN ABUJA; IT’S HEADED BY A DIRECTOR GENERAL
    NAFDAC’S CORE FUNCTIONS ARE:
    To Regulate and control the importation, exportation, manufacture, advertisement, distribution, sale and use of drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water and chemicals.

    To Conduct appropriate tests and ensure compliance with standard specifications designated and approved by the council for the effective control of quality of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water, and chemicals.

    To Undertake appropriate investigation into the production premises and raw materials for food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, bottled water and chemicals and establish a relevant quality assurance system, including certification of the production sites and of the regulated products.

    To Undertake inspection of imported foods, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, bottled water, and chemicals and establish a relevant quality assurance system, including certification of the production sites and of the regulated products.

    To Compile standard specifications, regulations, and guidelines for the production, importation, exportation, sale and distribution of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, bottled water, and chemicals
    Undertake the registration of food, drugs, medical devices, bottled water and chemicals
    Control the exportation and issue quality certification of food, drugs, medical devices, bottled water and chemicals intended for export

    To Establish and maintain relevant laboratories or other institutions in strategic areas of Nigeria as may be necessary for the performance of its functions.
